Our first hike of the year; get the Cubs out walking and take the Scouts out to prepare for the Brow Hike. It should have been an easy walk, one we have done many times in the past. The Cubs were to run around on the moor top while the Scouts did some map & compass work, but due to the weather this didn’t happen.
It was a bit windy in Sowerby Bridge, but blowing a howling gale on Norland Moor; too cold to sit around for lunch so we pressed …

The Scouts enjoyed a fun packed weekend at Bradley Wood Scout Campsite, where they pitched their tents in cool February.   Activities included archery, shooting, climbing,  zip wire, the fabulous cave bus and infamous troggart hunt.

Next we’re training for the Brow Hike.

After the previous years JOTT hike I issued a challenge to our Cubs – walk 10 miles in one day – the “Big Ten”. I had every confidence that they could all do this, but to make it easier we organised a circular walk around Norland Moor, with each circuit being 2½ miles long. This way, if any needed to drop out they could do so at the end of a circuit and we would never be more than a mile from the base.
At the same time we decided to …

If you can light a fire with soggy matches
While standing in a steady stream of rain,
And see it fizzle out before it catches,
And hold your tongue, and light the thing again;
If you can fix a brew for all your brothers
When they are in their blankets, warm and dry,
And rather you get wet than all the others,
And laugh when you are tired enough to cry;
If you can tie a knot that never fails you,
And trust it, if the worst comes to the worst,
To save your life when nothing else awaits you,
But …

As in previous years it has become traditional to go out for a walk between Christmas and New Year, called the Pudding Hike; designed to help walk off the Christmas Pudding and other eating excesses over this period.
We have walked in all weathers – deep snow, sunshine and rain – this year we had strong winds, with sun and showers.
The hike is never well attended and this year was no exception; we had 2 Cubs, 1 Scout and 4 Leaders! However we had a great day out – after traveling …

Sunday 1st December saw our annual Christmas party run by the SPYS (St Paul’s Youth Supporters).
The party weekend for the Cubs started with a train journey the day before to Halifax to go bowling and eat at McDonalds and back to Sowerby Bridge by train to round off the night with a sleepover and a film – Despicable Me 2.
Sunday morning started with parade where 2 Cubs were invested. Following parade, the party started with lots of silly games, followed by food – pizza & chips, buns, cakes & biscuits.
The …

New dates confirmed as 21st and 22nd September 2013 following our postponement back in March due to the snow.
We are keen to ensure that all teams who would have competed in the event in March are able to start the hike in September, even if some members have since had birthdays. Therefore the following amendments to the normal rules apply:
1. Age of Entrants – All 4 team members must be 11 or over on the day of the hike, and must have been aged 15 or younger on the 23rd …

24 Mar 2013

Due to heavy snow fall on the Friday morning and more forecast for later, this years Brow Hike has had to be postponed until later in the year.
I took a walk up in the snow on the Saturday morning just to see what it was like…
