JOTA 2018

JOTA 2018

The annual Jamboree on the Air event; this year a radio station was being set up at Steep Lane Chapel above Sowerby. 18 Cubs and leaders walked from Sowerby Bridge, along the canal to Luddenden Foot, where an hour was spent eating lunch and playing on the park. The sun was shining and the colours of the leaves was breathtaking.

That was the level easy part done, now it was climb up tracks and paths to reach our objective, the view made it all worth while.

At the chapel, members of Calderdale Raynet had set up two transceivers and we managed to communicate as far as Norway using the call sign GX2UG. The cubs also tried their hand at sending Morse Code, sign language, the phonetic alphabet and an attempt was made at communicating with the International Space Station.

After this we walked back to Sowerby Bridge, all downhill this time, arriving back in time to scoff pizza and watch a couple of films before bed. Distance walked today – 6 miles.

We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to Martin M0GQB, Darren M0WIT, Stuart G6NTI and Phil M6HNO for setting up and running the JOTA event and for Steep Lane Baptist Chapel for hosting us.
