One year we ran a Patrol Leaders weekend at Hebden Hey, our local campsite. On the Saturday we drove, with the scouts in the back of the van (can’t do that now), to the Penistone Hill Country Park near Haworth. There we dropped them off with maps & compasses to walk back to Hebden Hey; an easy exercise, or so we thought – a southerly direction over the hill and down Crimsworth Dean. We also provided them with a sealed envelope marked “If all else fails” with simple instructions on how to get back.
They later told us that they set off in a northerly direction (it was downhill and therefore easier walking) for about 10 minutes before deciding that they were lost. The envelope was opened and, to their credit, they did manage to follow the instructions to get them back to Hebden Hey.
It’s a good job we had given them a backup plan!
